I have owned Night owl products for over 20 years.I just replaced my old DVR wow the new is amazing.night owl is the greatest.

Hopefully you don't ever have to copy anything off the recorder. If you do the process to copy the files off the recorder is awful. You can't just select a time period that you want from a set number of cameras you can only grab the event that happened. If it took 20 seconds that is the video you get to download. If you want more than one camera you get to select one camera at a time to pull it off.The cameras are also proprietary to use only this recorder. I tried to use a different recorder from a brand that is universal and they did not work with these cameras. There is not settings to change on the camera to get the FPS down to work with any other recorder. I have been installing cameras for over 10 years and being doing IT for over 25 and this is a terrible recorder. I only purchased it as it would have cost more for me to purchase new cameras. I would highly recommend another brand.

Some channels would not display my existing Q-See cameras, while others would. I confirmed this by swapping the same cameras between various channels, so something was wrong with the unit. I returned it, and wouldn't want another because: There are many setting not available with this system. On my other 5 systems that I've had, or still have in use: (1) I can configure the app to communicate directly inside my wifi system (LAN), or through the cloud. This one only offers the cloud; so even if you are home, but the Internet goes down, you can't see your cameras. (2) The app only works in vertical mode, which makes the images very small in the upper half of the screen and nothing useful in the lower half. In all other brands of apps that I've had, it can be turn to landscape and the images are much bigger and fill the screen. (4) You can't swipe from channel to channel; you have to back out from a single channel to the multi-channel display, wait for it to load, and then select the next channel. (5) It takes a long time for the app to connect to the DVR, it sometimes fails, and I had to make a second attempt to connect (that could at least be remedied if you could connect point-to-point within the same LAN). (6) If a camera isn't working, it gets dropped from the monitor, and remaining channels shift to new locations in the app. I've had no other system do that, and it means a person has to take notice if a channel is missing (better to have it blank on-screen to draw attention to the problem, and keep the images in their same locations). In others that I have, I can select which channels to display. The images were clear and clean on the channels that worked. The DVR is compact and quiet with no fan.

I have a Night Owl 1080P with 8 Cameras, I Purchased this new 4k DVR to upgrade to a better DVR, however when I got it and connected all my cameras, they do have a better image, but the DVR has less setup options to choose from, The older DVR is 1000% better, And has double the setup options than this 4k new DVR. It doesn't even have the option to adjust sensitivity and setup viewing areas, it does not have automatic full screen view with motion detection like the older DVR has, I don't recommended, I would NOT buy this DVR again.

I purchased this to replace a dead Lorex unit that didn't last long. So far this dvr and it's app are better across the board. The app is way more user friendly than the Lorex app. If you want a dvr that is easy to setup and has an app that is extremely user friendly this is the one.

The device is unable to record video due to a bad hard drive from the time of installation. Unfortunately, by the time we were able to get a tech person to look at it to figure it out, the less than 30 window to return it had expired.
